Scientific referee/advisor of the Baillon Collection at the George Sand et de la Vallée Noire Museum (La Châtre, France).

Inventory and identification of c.a. 2500 mounted birds collected all over the world during the 18 and 19th centuries. Baillon father and son have been corresponding and exchanging with most famous naturalists of this time (Buffon, Cuvier, Geoffroy Saint-Hilaire, Temminck, Bonelli, Rüppell, Vieillot or Leach). Dozens of specimens have been collected during famous expeditions of this time (Lapérouse, Baudin, Freycinet, Dumont d'Urville, Bougainville, Ross etc.).

Since 2009, Biologist field worker in Morocco and Kazakhstan with the ECWP.

I am involved in a conservation breeding project on the Houbara Bustard in Morocco and the MacQueen Bustard in Kazakhstan. In Morocco we trapp birds for morphometric measurements and collect blood samples for genetic. Data about display behaviour, fledging birds dipersion, habitat quality, and anthropomorphic impacts are also taken. To ensure the restoration of natural MacQueen Bustard populations in Asia, a center for captive reproduction has been set up in Kazakhstan. This strategy requires to collect some eggs in the natural population to constitute a pool of genitors, first steps before release birds in their natural habitats. In both countries we radio-track birds formerly equiped with VHF-transmitters. Since 2007, Polar guide and ornithologist for polar travel & expedition cruises to the polar regions with Oceanwide Expeditions.

Since August 2007, I guide tourists groups in zodiac's trips and hiking in the High Arctic (Svalbard, Greenland and Jan Mayne) and Antarctica (Falkland I., South Georgia I., Shetlands I., and Antarctic Peninsula). These polar regions are known for their fragility, then, I give some lectures about these ecosystems and about the ecology of animals and plants living there.

2007-2008, Biologist ecologist in the Listel-Jarras estate, Southern France.

From October 2007 to June 2008 and in October 2008, I had to highlight the natural heritage of the estate. Listel's estate has the singularity to offer 50% of its area as natural habitats (dunes, temporary marshes, pine woods). These habitats present a high natural value that Listel wants to highlight by protecting, restoring and by organizing activities for visitors. I am co-author of the management plan that will provide actions to preserve natural habitats around wine yards and to produce wine quality by a sustainable use of the landscap. Monitoring wildlife (hares, partridges, rollers, European-pond turtles…) was also part of my job as well as listing off flora and fauna. I was naturalist guide for visitors (in french and in english). I also studied the Colombidae and hare's dynamic of population by data sampling on hunted animals.

 

 

2006, research assistant on Middleton Island (Alaska), behavioral and evolutionary implications of the strict monogamy in the Black-legged Kittiwake (Rissa tridactyla).

Joël White's research topics:

- Behavioural strategies used by birds to maximise their reproductive output. Why do monogamous female kittiwakes frequently eject sperm after copulation? Using correlative and experimental data, results have shown that this behaviour is a strategy by which females select for young sperm to fertilise their eggs thereby maximising their reproductive success.

- The second part of the study has been exploring a non-exclusive alternative explanation to this behaviour, i.e. that females reduce the amount of bacteria transmitted during the copulation and thus reduces the negative impact of sexual transmitted diseases on their condition. Thus, an experiment using "condoms" was performed and a number of cloacal samples were collected in order to better understand the impact of cloacal bacteria on female body condition (weight, hematocrite and colour) and their importance in processes such as mate choice and sexual conflict.

- Last, to increase the knowledge about incubation eco-physiology and in particular egg-shell water vapour conductance, a highly variable and poorly understood trait.

 - The choice of the mate according to genetic parameters. Do mates choose each other in order to maximize their genetic distance? Two types of genetic markers are studied: microsatellites and the MHC (Major Histocompatibilty Complex).

 - Individual recognition, particularly vocal recognition which is essential in the mating process. The study of these vocal parameters has 2 objectives 1) to consolidate the description made by Wooller (Zeitschrift fur Tierpsychologie, 1978) in the Black-legged Kittiwake and 2) if there is a choice of the mate , do they use the song to do it?

2002 - 2006, M. Sc.: Allometric relationships and resource allocation of Scirpus maritimus.

Supervisor: Jean-François Giroux (UQAM)

Co-supervisor: François Mesléard (Station Biologique de la Tour-du-Valat).

Objective: Elaborate allometric equations in order to estimate above- and belowground biomass of Scirpus maritimus in a non destructive way in  temporary marshes in southern France. This non destructive sampling allowing to carry out a long-term monitoring of the vegetation, it is then possible to quantify the impacts of cattle and greylag goose on the production of above- and belowground (mainly tubers) parts of Scirpus maritimus, respectively.
